The September Issues aims to challenge and redefine women’s publishing. We set ourselves apart from our contemporaries by creating for an audience that is not only interested in fashion, but is politically and socially aware. The September Issues gives women creatives the opportunity to express themselves freely, explore their identities, and build a community without any constraints—a place where art, beauty, fashion, and topical issues can be discussed from a purely feminine perspective; a community that reflects the diversity and power of global femininity. We are unique in that this is a biannual magazine made by women. Each issue will donate a portion of its proceeds to an organization which supports women, and for this issue we have chosen Planned Parenthood. Our goal is to make fashion, an industry intrinsically linked with the rights of women, a feminist issue. We celebrate all types of women, which is why the theme of our first issue is “The Power of the Femme.” All of our contributors for this issue have been asked to interpret this concept as they wish, because female empowerment isn’t just a marketing gimmick on a t-shirt— it’s a point that has become impossible to ignore. The magazine aims to share ideas of identity, discover ritual and ceremony; celebrate and champion women pioneers of the past and present, and those yet to come—exchanging the story of women’s lives through visual and intellectual vocabularies.
Politically, the world is fragmented. Recent events have demonstrated that change is most definitely the only thing we can be sure of in this moment. We, The September Issues, want to be an active part of that change. We want to empower women by celebrating their achievements, and strive for the creation of an influential voice of equality of our future society
The September Issues champions and celebrates women from all backgrounds and ethnicities. The ‘Pioneer’ section of the magazine features influential women who dedicate their lives to being the very best at what they do. Rather than have a traditional interview, we give each pioneer a blank page to make their own artwork. There are no rules when it comes to the pioneer’s page, it is theirs to express themselves however they wish.
The first issue includes Winnie Harlow, Alma Har’el, Piera Gelardi, Zowie Broach, Zackary Drucker, Kelly-Eve Koopman + Sarah Summers.
‘Identity’ is our fashion section where we let the contributors run wild with their concepts. We don’t want to see any moodboards, this section is about trusting each artist’s vision. Photographers include Nadine Ijewere, Amber Mahoney ft. Harry Charlsworth + Sussi, Trisha Ward ft. Lily Inge Newmark, Clare Shilland ft. Amber Anderson, Clara Nebeling, Prue Stent + Honey Long, Sarai Mari, Rebekah Campbell ft. Ali Michael, Arianna Lago, and Rosaline Shahnavaz
‘Ritual’ is our beauty section where we talk about how ancient rituals pertain to our modern day practices. This issue focuses on ancient Egypt. Our 3 stories include modern interpretations of the bob hair style, the cat eye ft beauty editor Georgina Graham, and ceremonious clay masks and jewelry by beauty editor Tiziana Raimondo with photography by Mary Rozzi.
Our editorial section features authentic, honest and vulnerable stories told by women. Contributors featured in this section include Claude Cahun, NYC based Lula Hyers, still life photographer Jenny Van Sommers, NYC based Andrea Gentl and Oaxaca based Jessica Chrastil.
In the center of the magazine, we have a big historical article about the 100 year history of Planned Parenthood.
