When 3 colleges moved into one school at King’s Cross’ 1 Granary Square in 2011, a new era of Central Saint Martins started. We were ready to continue the Saint Martins legacy of legendary designers like Phoebe Philo, Galliano and McQueen, and creative energy was buzzing from all directions. But, they didn’t let us write on the walls anymore. A new space was needed; a new outlet to let this generation’s voice be heard. In 2012, a group of students from different pathways got together and started 1Granary.com, to offer a place for those voices to speak. A year later, 1 Granary’s first printed magazine was released, which was aptly called The Birth Place. We spoke with some of fashion’s finest minds, and featured a handful of the college’s newest talent, but we wanted to continue the journey.
Why do we do it? To be able to have a graduate collection seen and shot by Nick Knight, and styled by Simon Foxton; to have up-and-coming Central Saint Martins designers sit alongside Christopher Kane; to be able to talk to the creatives whose work we respect.
