The Fullest - Summer 2018
Addiction is like climate change. It constantly surrounds us, yet we don’t pay attention to it until it manifests into a problem. However, aren’t we all addicts in some form or another? We’re addicted to chaos, love, food, drugs, news, alcohol, shopping, and the list goes on. In today’s wellness-obsessed world, we’re now even addicted to being better.
What makes addiction such a potent topic are the complexities between societal influences on our addictions. It’s ingrained in our culture to overconsume — it’s the foundation of our economy. Corporations use our vulnerabilities as a way to advance, which ultimately leaves us feeling incomplete and less-than.
So, does addiction stem from a lack of feeling whole? Is it hereditary? Is it learned? What about healing or overcoming an addiction? How do we do that and what are our weaknesses teaching us? How can we use them as catalysts that shape us into more connected, compassionate beings?
We hope you’ll contemplate these topics as we explore the infinite world of addiction together. Because in the end, coming together is what helps us heal and move forward.
